AND SO THEY KNOW
It’s nearly summer, so the air that night felt rather warm. The sky was clear, there were many visible stars, and in the whispering woods, the cicadas started singing. It actually felt rather calm, and nice, the students in Salem Academy could spend their time sleeping, or talking to their friends in this kind of weather. Unfortunately for four students, though, they’ll be facing a detention during the next hours, and even more unfortunate, they’ll be facing an unlikely challenge that they’d never saw coming. Professor Kennedy was waiting alone in the voodoo studies classroom. He’s busy preparing the detention for the four unfortunate students, humming as he did so. He was both liked and respected by the students and his fellow colleagues. He had a sarcastic sense of humor, but not cynical, plus he loved interacting with his students, and taught them many bizarre but useful things. However, he was also considered to be scary for the exact same thing, and sometimes, there’s this intimidating aura that was erupted from him, even when he acted all smiley and all. A good student knew to never messing around with him. “Ah, miss Belross! I see you’ve arrived earlier than I expected! Please take your seat,” professor Kennedy flashed a big grin to a student that just arrived in his class. He moved a bit, and stood under the window. His dark skin was glistening under the moonlight, and he pinned his gaze to the girl who took her seat far away from him. He smirked as she awkwardly fixed her golden hair, and said “I thought you like sitting in front.” He earned himself a scowl, and so he laughed. “I guess your partner in crime isn’t here yet, and also the rest of the lucky students. There’ll be two of them, and not only they’re a year above you, each of you will be representing a different house. Try to have a calm and collected detention, alright?” the man teased and leaned back to the table. “I see you ignored me per-usual, Miss Bellross. But that’s okay, take your time,” smirking, Professor Kennedy crossed his hands and glanced to the door, waiting for the other three to make their appearance.

Verania Bellross was scowling the entire time she made her way to the Salem Academy chateau. It was nearly 10 p.m, and she left Parris dorm in hurry, anxious that the imp will suddenly made their appearance because it’s nearly lights out. The blonde wore her usual uniform, and she was glad that the Professor didn’t ask her to wear the robe, it was rather warm and she’s not in the mood to become sweaty. The raccoon cursed a certain red head as she walked through the white pebbles and lantern path, it was his fault that she got into this. It’s not like this would be her first night detention, she just disliked the idea of people got her in trouble. Since this was Alvero Foster though, her friend, she decided that she’s not going to kill him. “He better notice how lucky he is!” the blonde hissed. Vera had arrived on the chateau, and stopped a while to greet the passing teachers. Despite her bitter reputation amongst the students—she was known as an arrogant and cocky little girl who brushed other students away—the teachers were actually quite fond of her. She was bright indeed, and at least she knew her manners during the presence of the professors. Ah you, Vera huffed when she just reached the assigned detention classroom. It was in voodoo studies class, so of course Professor Aiden Kennedy would be here. It’s not like she dislike him or some sort, she just thought he’s very creepy sometimes, and there’s this something about him that bothered her, but she couldn’t figure it out yet. “Professor,” Vera announced her arrival and greeted the Afro-American man. He greeted her back, and moved his position as she chose her seat. Many girls said that he was gorgeous and alluring, Vera admitted it too. She turned 15 at the beginning of the year, and she’ll be a fourth year on the next semester, so she suspected she could already tell which person that looked attractive in general. Settling her seat, Vera sighed and began to fix her hair, thing she always did whenever she’s nervous. Usually, the blonde always sat in front during class, but right now she didn’t feel like it, and practically sat on the furthest corner on the right side of the door. Besides, it’s not a class.. she thought as the teacher brought up her habit. Vera unconsciously scowled at the professor, and continued to ties up her hair into a messy bun, ignoring his laughter. She never liked anyone teasing her, except if they’re already close enough in personal. The man spoke again, and this time she actually listened to him, since his info was not entirely useless. Who are the remaining of the two, she wondered. She really hoped that they’re not the students who held a grudge towards her—not that she would mind, she just wanted to finish this detention as soon as possible. Tomorrow is Sunday, true, but there’ll be 3 quizzes in Monday, so she really needed to study. Calmly, Vera leaned front to her table, and propped her chin with the inside of her palm. She really hoped that Vero is not going to be late.

Santi sneezes out loud, earning looks from a passing imp. It gives her a suspicious look along with a scowl. Uh oh, better tell him ASAP. “I got detention with Professor Kennedy,” She told him quickly. The imp pauses on his steps and to Santi’s relieve, turn around. Not wanting to encounter any more imps or students (or teachers for that matter), Santi pick up her paste. Today’s detention will be held at the voodoo’s classroom. The Indonesian do not particularly fond with that classroom but desensitized enough to not pay any mind to the decoration there. She zipped up her jacket. It’s late, she’s tired, she’s sleepy, better get this over with. At least tomorrow is Sunday, she can get up late.
How did the Beverly member got herself landed on detention? Well, a teacher was passing by when the deer is practising one of her pencak silat move. The sasandang technique require a piece of long cloth, a scarf usually would suffice. The technique basically allows you to stop an enemy attack by wrapping the cloth around them person, effectively binding them. Santi was caught in a compromising scene where she have her cloth wrapped around her partner’s neck. Both she and her training partner tried to reason with the teacher but she won’t budge. It may be practice but Santi could seriously injure her partner. Also, the staff knows about her martial art prowess. Santi never fatally injure someone before. Okay there was one case where she broke someone’s jaw but he was harassing her.
Anyways!
In her musings, Santi didn’t realize that she have reached the voodoo classroom. “Well, here goes nothing” She open the door. Professor Kennedy and a student are there. “Good evening Professor Kennedy” The Indonesian greeted him. After the teacher greet back, Santi take a seat not far from a blonde girl. She somewhat recognize her. Verania Belross, her younger housemates once ranted to her about the racoon. They describe her as arrogant and cocky. So she got a sharp tongue… People with sharp tongue are usually the cynical and harshest critics. But Santi is confident she can take her on. How can she survive in the film industry if she can’t handle sharp tongues?

Alvero Foster walks toward the voodoo studies classroom with his hands tuck behind his head. It’s almost 10 p.m., and he can see that dark figures start to emerge from behind the shadows, ready to pounce on any students that break the rules. “I have permission to leave the dorm. No need to catch me,” he shouts, warning the figure that almost stepped out from the shadow. While he fancies the idea of having another race against the imp, but right no he has detention to attend. He has no intention to be late, only to lose another hour of sleep because of extra detention. And anyway, Vera will definitely kill him if he’s late. Well, it’s kinda his fault that they ended up here in the first place.
The bear sighs, combing his hair and make it messier in the process. It’s not like he wants to be caught by the teacher too… he thought his spell will fail, or at least it will only deal minimum damage. But no… his spell decided to fail him in a whole another level. He only wanted to test his new memory loss charm with TNG, and asked Vera to help him if the spell didn’t work. TNG refused at first, afraid that something will happen because… well, it’s Vero. But the golden raccoon managed to get him agree to try this spell. Then again, his wand had been weird the entire day. He was chased by the boggart from his previous class and couldn’t launch any spell because his wand refused to heed his word. He swore the next time the professor asks him to face boggart again, he’d jinx it before it can steps out from the chest. His wand might already be a bad omen, but he never thought that his spell would launch to every direction, and landed right on TNG’s head, making the blonde passed out. Originally, he wanted to just bury the body at the cemetery and took it at night where no one around so he could heal him or something, but the loud crash of his spell managed to invite a teacher. Thus, he and Vera got a detention (she was there too! She partly responsible for coaxing TNG into joined this experiment!).
Without him realizing, he already stands in front of the voodoo studies classroom. The bear opens the door and slides inside with ease. “Hey, boss! Never thought we’d spend the night together again!” he waves lazily toward Professor Kennedy while silently scanning the room. There are only two students inside, which means they’re still missing one student aside from him. He walks towards the golden raccoon that he knows so well. “Yo, Fluffy. Early like usual, huh?” he takes a seat right beside her, tucking his hand behind his head. He glances at the other student, a Beverly girl. He recognizes her as the Indonesian student who learns Pencak Silat. Some womanizers in Thorn decide to not mess with her in case she decides to hit them or something. He smirks in amusement, ‘It might not be as boring as I thought it would be.’

It's 10 pm already, but instead following his plan to finish reading his new book, Camille is now walking outside Skelton's dorm towards academy chateau with sulky expression in his face.True that he sulks almost all the time, but this time, it's for an entirely different reason: detention from Professor Kennedy.
The reason for that is supposed to not be his fault as the one who caused the commotion and fight with another house students were not him. But well, since it's one of his so-called fan members who started it, who done it because they were called something like 'that girly boy's slaves', he felt responsible and took the blame. After all, even if his fans didn't used bat-bogey hex to attack those guys and started the riot, he actually would jinx them himself for calling him 'girly boy'.
He might not really that irritated right now, if only Mou, his roomate and maybe, the closest friend he has, didn't poked about those incident, saying how nice he is for taking all the blame. "As always Cam, you're such a very nice and responsible person. I'm honoured to be your roomate!" Remembering Mou's tease that said by him while holding back his laugh, just making Camille even sulkier.
Camille arrived in front of the voodoo studies classroom after 10 minutes walking and knocked it. "Excuse me." he said politely but firmly while straighten his expression. After all, he don't want to be rude to a professor for showing a sulky expression. When he walked inside and entered the room, he realized that today detention session wouldn't be just him and Professor Kennedy alone. Because inside, he saw three students were already there. One boy and two girls, it made them a complete double pairs.

It wasn’t long until the door opened again. “Good evening, Miss Nugroho,” and Professor Kennedy spoke again, smiling at the just arrived Indonesian girl. He watched her sitting not far from her junior, before he eventually turned his attention at the door again. Santi Nugroho’s arrival was calm and collected, but this one was lively, and so he knew exactly who just arrived. “Don’t ‘hey boss’ me Mr. Foster. Flattery won’t get you anywhere,” the man smirked at the redheaded boy, glad that he was here to break the ice. He then glanced again to the Beverly girl, thinking that at least, she and the Thorn kid could probably, get along just fine. Now… where’s the last lucky student?
Knock, knock, speaking of the devil. “Come in,” Kennedy stood up straight, and walked to his table as he permitted whoever that knocked the door to precede. Finally, Camille Regis made his appearance, looking a bit tense, but polite. “Evening Mr. Regis, please take your seat next to your classmate,” the professor nodded at the teen in acknowledgement, and tilted his head towards Santi. How interesting, not only there were two boys and two girls in this room, each pair of them also came from the same grade—Verania and Alvero from the third year, and Santi and Camille from the fourth year. What more interesting was that, Verania and Alvero were used to detention, but for Santi and Camille, that’s new.. However, he’s also surprised about the reason why all of them were now stuck in his detention. For some teachers, these students' mistake were very troublesome, but Kennedy found it silly and amusing.
“You two, huddle up with your seniors,” Professor Kennedy instructed the younger students, while preparing a bunch of stacked papers. Their hands are going to be really sore in the morning, the thought made him pity them, but it also amused him at the same time. “Chop, chop, we don’t have all night,” the man added without looking at his students, but knowing exactly that some of them were reluctant to move.

Vera merely turned her head at the new arrived student. It’s a girl, so since it’s not Alvero Foster, she didn’t really care about the person. However, when her teacher mentioned ‘Nugroho,’ she couldn’t help but to look at her. She heard about someone with that name before—a girl, true, but not just a girl. She overheard her classmate, talking about her in such admiration, chatting about how friendly she was, about her figures, and… talents.
Now that she got a better look at her, Vera was disappointed. She didn’t match her expectation, especially with all that glorified reputation of hers. Sighing in annoyance, Vera turned her head to face the wall. That was when the door opened again, and she didn’t even have to look to recognize the new person. His remarked with their professor was enough. “And you’re not late, good,” said the girl as she felt someone pull a seat next to her, unimpressed. Though yes, she’s glad at the fact that Alvero Foster was not late. “How’s TNG?” finally, she faced her friend, “You’re not planning on anything funny, don’t you?” and asked him in a low voice, spotting his smirk almost immediately.
Then the door opened again, and Vera’s eyes befall upon the new arrival. Nope, she didn’t recognize him, and if it wasn’t for his voice, she’d probably mistake him as a girl. “You owe me a big lunch. How’s TNG, by the way?” ignoring his conversation with Professor Kennedy, Vera looked up to Vero again. But of course, the teacher should interrupt by instructing her and Vera to move next to Nugroho. Vera tried her best to not glaring at him, since Professor Kennedy knew exactly that she disliked sitting with strangers. Suppressing a groan, the blond stood up reluctantly, and waited until Vero either dragged or led her to the seniors’ table.

Santi turn her head around when she heard the door open. Enter Alvero Foster, one of House Thorn's most well known troublemaker/prankster. He always hang out with his buddies from different houses and generally well liked. The Indonesian never spoken with him though. The redhead take a seat next to Belross. Ah, she saw them together once in a while. Looks like those two are on pretty good terms... Not long after Foster, another person come in. Camille Regis, a Skelton pureblood. Santi never spoken with him before as well.
"You two, huddle up with your seniors." Professor Kennedy commands to the third years. It's clear that Belross is reluctant to sit with them but she did anyways. Santi give the two years a small smile before looking at her task. Santi pick up her quill, dipping the tip into the ink bottle before start writing. This takes her back to her kindergarten days... When she first learn how to write 'beautifully'. Out of the four, Santi is the only one that appears to be in a good mood... She is neither feeling happy or sad, just annoyed that she's in detention. The quicker she finished this, the more sleeping hours she'll have.

Camille sighed quietly. Sitting around stranger isn't really something he fond of. True he usually let his fans surround him, but that's because mostly of them are from his own house, and he know them all. While these three, now when he look at them closely, all of them each from different houses. He did know the Indonesian girl, only from rumors told by his fans though, and because he sometime saw her in several classes he took as they're from the same year. But the other two, he don't really recognize them. Probably because of the fact that they're his junior. This put him on his guard while squints in disbelief. Truly a Skelton he's now for being cautious toward his 'detention buddies'. But now's not the time to complain. He can't complain a professor anyway, and so he sits next to the Indonesian girl without saying anything that will worsen his situation.
While bitterly thinking about how he want to get out of that place quickly, he took a quick glance to the pair of fourth year who reluctantly walk up towards their table. He don't want to judge people from their appearance only, but those two honestly, spell trouble to him. The boy especially, while the blonde seems more of an arrogant type. He might be able to found one or two distinctive traits of them, but right now, he didn't feel like it, and so, he shifted his gaze cooly from them and just gazing blankly with his chin rested in his right hand while waiting for Professor Kennedy's next instruction.

Vero smirks at the Professor's remark. 'Oh no, Professor,' he thought. 'Flattery will get you anywhere.' Remembering those words makes him chuckle to himself. He turns toward Vera again upon hearing her question and arches an eyebrow. "Why did you ask twice? Are you that worried about him?" he asks, wiggling his eyebrows in that annoying way of his. "He's fine. Well, he's under medical care but aside from that he's fine."
Upon seeing the stack of papers and hearing the Professor's remark, Vero feigning a tired sigh. "If tomorrow my hands can't move, you're the main suspect for this, Professor," he shakes his head while trying to hide his grin. To be honest, he was expecting a heavier detention for his action. Not that writing on a bunch of papers is entertaining, but he used to this punishment. So it's not really a problem if he can't feel his hands tomorrow because his peers will be willing to share their notes with him.
"Come on, Fluffy. The faster we finish, the better," he pulls Vera gently towards the seniors. He knows that it's not a smart move to just sit carelessly beside a Skelton who respect their personal space, so he chooses to sit on the other side of the Beverly girl. Well, you don't have to always sit beside someone to try to know them, right? "Hello," he smiles back to the Beverly senior, and waves to the Skelton. "I think it's gonna be a long night here. So why don't we try to know each other more?" he picks his quill, getting ready to write. "It's not a bad idea to... have more acquaintances, y'know?" showing his cringe-like grin, he finally starts to write.

“Aww Mr. Foster.. sue me,” Professor Kennedy waited until the students settled around Santi, and smirked as he watched Verania and Camille reluctantly took their seat. Alvero and Santi on the other hand, looked fine with the situation. So this detention could probably end with… peace. “Let’s get started,” the teacher approached the students, and divided the papers equally into stack for all of them. “Well, you know what you have to do. Just pick up your quill and start writing about how sorry you are, make sure that you finished all the papers, and don’t even think to write in a large font—and yes, I’m talking to you Mr. Foster,” Kennedy explained and watched his students pick up the quill and started writing.
“I’ll tell the imp to not bother you, and to let you guys roaming around between this classroom, the bathroom on the end of the corridor, teacher’s tower—in case you need me, and your dormitory—in case you finished,” after some moments observing them, he finally clapped his hands, and walked behind them. “Remember, try to be nice with each other, like Mr. Foster suggested. It’ll probably come in handy, you’ll never know,” the man smirked again, pat Santi and Camille on their shoulder, and scrambled Verania and Alvero’s hair. After that, he’s off to leave the class, back to the teacher’s tower like he said, and hoped that the students will bond with each other.
Now.. it’ll be up to the students how they’ll carry their detention. However, the clock was ticking nearer to the dark hour, and without them noticing, they’re getting closer to the event they could never reverse.

Vera rolled her eyes upon Vero’s question. “Of course I do. If he’s heavily injured then the consequences lies on me too,” and answered gruffly. TNG and her shared some romantic history, which contradictory to people’s believed, was not romantic at all. It was purely business, but they didn’t know that. However, Vero knew, and sometimes she wondered why he’s being so snarky about it. She didn’t resist when he pulled her wrist to their seniors’ table, and observed them down with her signature cold stare. The Skelton’s gesture gave her a negative vibe, and she instantly disliked him just because he looked away and ignored them. However, the Beverly girl smiled warmly to her and her friend, so she softened her gaze a little bit, and nodded to her. Vero settled next to Nugroho, and so she settled next to him.
Picking up her quill, Vera thought about even though Vero’s idea of knowing each other was not a bad idea, it was kinda useless too, at least for her. She’s not interested in any of their seniors and she’s definitely against the idea to have to spoke more. However, she held that thought because Professor Kennedy was still around. Vera pulled a paper and began to write while their teacher started talking about trivial things, however, she stopped and scowled when he walked behind them and scrambled hers and Vero’s hair.
She couldn’t be more relieved when he decided to leave them. “Less talking, more work. You suggested that we should finish this quickly, right? Talking and getting to know each other means that our focus will be divided, and you write really slow, so you better start now,” the girl spoke matter of factly to her classmate, and began to write again. She really hoped that the silence will enveloped this detention room, instead of chatter.

Santi watches in amusement when Professor Kennedy ruffles the fourth years' hair. Belross looks annoyed. At least her Bear companion is more friendly. Makes up for her gruffness she supposed. The Skelton next to her don't say anything, but him willingly sit next to her is a surprise in itself. Santi shouldn't push it. "If you don't mind me answering in short sentences. Like your friend said, less talking more work" Santi hums as her hand moved. Hey, they don't say anything about humming. Technically she's not talking.

Vero scoffs at Vera's respond. Of course... it's purely business. His train of thoughts stopped when Mr. Kennedy ruffled their head and said something about not writing in large font. "Aw, why can't I Professor?" he mutters with no real bites in it. He tried that trick once, and it's not the kind of trick that will work twice, especially to someone as sharp as Mr. Kennedy. He stares at the door for a while, before turning toward the other again.
He arches an eyebrow, a bit offended at Vera's remark, because they can still finish their detention even with the talking and he's not that slow at writing (he pulled off an all-nighter working on an essay for the next day and he managed to finished it). However the Beverly senior agreed to her, so he has no choice but to comply. The majority want silence here, and he will respect their demand. He smiles to the Beverly senior, "it's cool. Let's just finish this then," and redo his writing just because he started it with large font.

Oh, no. having too much acquaintances could bring unwanted troubles, Camille thought to himself in respond to what the Thorn boy said. Though well, he didn’t said it out loud. Even he knows how to be considerate at times. He just sighed again, for Merlin knows how many times today, and sulked when Mr. Kennedy said his last words for them before patted his and Santi's shoulder, and ruffled over the fourth years couple’s hair.
Probably come in handy? In what way it will come in handy anyway if they’re being nice to each other while trying to finish this detention? Camille couldn’t come up with an answer. Not that he know what would happen in the future though. Thankfully the girls both seem agreed to just work in silent. He then took his quill and a paper, and began to write without saying anything.
